{ORIGINAL ARTICLE} At Kunes Auto Group, we believe that everyone deserves the freedom and independence that comes with driving, regardless of physical challenges. Recently, we had the pleasure of discussing this critical issue with Jordan Wilkins, Youth Sports Director at the Wisconsin Adaptive Sports Association (WASA), during an insightful "Kunes Car Convos" episode. In our conversation, Jordan shared his personal journey, the significance of adaptive sports, and how accessible vehicles play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

What is WASA?

The Wisconsin Adaptive Sports Association (WASA) is more than just an organization; it's a community dedicated to improving the lives of individuals with disabilities through sports and recreation. WASA’s programs offer adaptive sports opportunities that foster physical health, social engagement, and emotional well-being. For many, these activities are more than just games—they are gateways to a more independent life.

Coaching the WASA

You can hear the pride in Jordan's voice when he talks about coaching kids through WASA, especially when discussing those he has coached over the years who have gone on to earn scholarships at college programs. Even for those who aren't college-bound, WASA provides them with a sense of community and purpose. It's this strong community that makes WASA truly special.

Jordan Wilkins Story

Jordan shares how his life changed after a fall from a building while helping friends in his hometown. The accident caused a spinal cord injury, leaving him paralyzed and forcing him to relearn many basic motor functions, including how to drive. This experience led him to discover adaptive sports, where he eventually became a youth coach. He proudly highlights winning three national championships with his team.

The Importance of Adaptive Mobility

Adaptive mobility solutions are essential for people with disabilities, providing them with the tools they need to lead independent lives. While wheelchair-accessible vans are a crucial option for many, they are not the only solution. In fact, as Jordan pointed out, many individuals with disabilities, especially those with paraplegia, prefer driving regular vehicles equipped with hand controls. These vehicles allow them to maintain their personal style and preferences, whether that means driving a sports car, an SUV, or even a motorcycle.

One of the most significant misconceptions about adaptive driving is the belief that individuals with disabilities must use specialized, often less stylish, vehicles. As Jordan noted, many young people with disabilities are amazed to learn that they can drive a vehicle that suits their personality and lifestyle, thanks to adaptive equipment like hand controls. This realization not only expands their sense of freedom but also boosts their confidence and sense of possibility.

Kunes Auto Group: A One-Stop Shop for Adaptive Vehicles

Understanding the unique needs of the adaptive driving community, Kunes Auto Group has made it a priority to provide accessible solutions that cater to everyone. We offer a wide range of adaptive vehicles, from hand controls to wheelchair-accessible vans, all available under one roof. This approach eliminates the need for customers to visit multiple locations or pay extra for third-party installations.

Moreover, as a dealer for major brands like Toyota, Ford, and Chrysler, Kunes Auto Group can offer mobility rebates and integrate the cost of adaptive equipment into vehicle financing. This means that instead of having to come up with thousands of dollars upfront for modifications, customers can simply roll those costs into their vehicle loan, making adaptive driving more affordable and accessible than ever before.
