WASA Rugby Team Runner-Up at Nationals

This post was written by Sara Hutchins, coach of the WASA Rugy Team

Last weekend I had the honor and joy of watching this team compete at the United States Wheelchair Rugby Association National Championship! This group of athletes never ceases to impress and inspire me. They clinched a spot in the D2 championship game and earned a second-place finish in an exciting overtime match! They played the best rugby I have seen this team play for almost 2 hours straight, and I am beyond proud!

This D2 championship game was quite special. Each player on the court, for both teams, had experienced a Spinal Cord Injury leaving them paralyzed. In the world of Wheelchair Rugby most dominating teams have some players with higher levels of function (not paralyzed). The fact that WASA - Wisconsin Adaptive Sports Association /CKRI and NEP Wheelchair Rugby both made it to the championship and in the top 8 in the nation, is extremely impressive! I believe, and correct me if I am wrong, they are the only two teams in the top 10 with all spinal cord injury starters! AND they both had rockstar females on the bench!

I feel so lucky to have been a part of this phenomenal moment!
